This paper discusses the trend of separation between mothers and daughters in the 1950s in American society through the analysis of Plath’s autobiographical novel The Bell Jar and The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath published in 2000. Meanwhile, along with the study of Letters Home compiled by her mother,the obstacles in the mother-daughter discourses is also examined through decoding the disparity between their discourses. Since constructing the bonds between mothers and daughters have become the focus of feminist concern, this paper will provide new ways to eliminate the barriers between mother-daughter communications by tracing back to the 1950s.
