Business English correspondence is an important way of communication in the international business activities and needs an economic and effective pragmatic principle to guide its writing. Traditional pragmatic principles cannot direct the whole process of speech because of its one-sidedness. By contrast, New Economy Principle covers the whole process of speech communication by means of its dynamic and comprehensive analysis. Therefore, New Economy Principle can be used as a pragmatic principle to guide business correspondence writing. This paper specifically discusses the application of its maxims in the optimal distribution of business messages, aiming to help the writer to maximize the communicative effect with a minimal quantity of speech.
